As Lighting Designers we cannot escape looking at lighting everywhere. Instinctively we look at the ceilings and critique lighting in any place we go to (just ask my wife). We also appreciate when lighting is done well, and welcome thoughtful lighting design as it raises the bar for all of us.
The same applies to products. While in a train in Tokyo recently (JR Yamanote Line in case you are familiar with Tokyo and are interested)—I came across an ad panel for a consumer grade color temperature changing LED surface mounted fixture.

It is not everyday that the product and design director for Louis Poulsen Lighting drops by your office. Luckily we had a few days’ notice that Flemming Hald was coming so we had time to prepare an ambush! When our favorite manufacturer’s representative Anne Frederiksen and Flemming came by, they thought they were coming to get our reaction to several new fixtures in development at Louis Pouslen. Little did they know that they would be walking into an unsolicited design pitch from Oculus! As we presented our concept for fixture we called “LP West”, we could see a funny glint in Flemming’s eye and a crooked smile starting to form.

Why Oculus Light Studio?
Oculus is Latin for eye. It is also a circular aperture that allows light into a space (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oculus).
Since lighting design is a very visual profession and our job is to decide where the light allowing apertures go, the two meanings of the word suit a lighting design firm well. Realizing that there is more to lighting design that just locating lights, the eye represents both observation and perception – both important aspects of what we do.
