Virtual Lumen West Awards

The winners of the 2020 Lumen West Awards were announced this weekend, and although we didn’t get to dress up and have a fancy dinner this year, Oculus was still excited and proud to take home two more awards! Our IES Lumen West Award of Merit winners this year are the Aviron offices and Athletic Propulsion Labs retail store.

Aviron in French means “rowing”, so the design team followed the film production company’s mission to “unite and move forward” by creating the feel of a boat moving through streaming waters. This storybook office uses lighting to guide you from the “waterfall” at the entry through a flowing corridor past the stroking paddles of decorative pendants in the conference room, finally leading you to the lounge where the warm cove lighting reveals the “boat’s joists” within the ceiling structure.

Athletic Propulsion Labs is in an entirely different ballpark, where lighting elevates the minimalist aesthetic of this high-end shoe store. This flagship location was designed to replicate an art gallery, where the shoes become the “art” and create rhythmic pops of color. Each box is illuminated via diffused backlit surfaces and concealed integral niche lighting without the use of any external spotlights. The store’s dramatic scale intrigues customers, and the lighting helps create a calming yet dramatic environment.
