Oculus' Summer Travels

Among all the deadlines, and the visiting interns, it still was an eventful summer for the Oculus team outside of the studio! Many of us were able to do a bit of traveling, whether going abroad or venturing out on weekend camping excursions. As the season is coming to a close, we thought it would be nice to take a look back and share some of the unique things that each of us did. We hope you had a wonderful summer as well!

ARCHIT

As part of his family’s experimental “visit a country a year” plan, Archit and family took a trip to Chile. A country with many landscapes, they were able to catch some contemporary architecture in Santiago, visit the Andes Mountains for some August skiing, see the the stark visuals of the Atacama desert with the Valle de La Luna (Moon Valley) and view the colorful murals of the ocean-side town of Valparaiso. Exceptionally cool to him was the Tropic of Capricorn (nerd!).

AUBREY

Late August, Aubrey visited family and friends in Chicago. Her trip included stopping off at classic staples such as the old-world themed German tavern, Laschet’s Inn, where she steered off from her usual vegetarian palette for some Schnitzel. Afterwards she headed to the iconic Green Mill jazz club.  Other activities included art gallery perusing and hanging with family.

CHAO-WEI

While in New York City, Chao-Wei visited the lighting manufacturer, XAL. He was able to enjoy some additional time exploring the iconic parts of the city that included a stroll around Grand Central Park on a mild, cool Sunday morning and taking in the brevity of the moment while underneath the building foundation at the 9/11 Memorial.

JANE

Over the long Labor Day weekend, Jane and her husband fished from sunrise to sunset, and camped by the Owens River in the Eastern Sierra. Jane witnessed the wondrous circle of life as she observed, “We got eaten by mosquitoes, but the mosquitoes got eaten by the fish, and we ate the fish!”

JOEL

Joel took it easy and visited family on the East Coast. “Lobster bakes, sunset fishing, campfires and daily soft serve ice cream pretty much sums up our east coast trip to visit grandma & friends in Maine.”

SARAH

Sarah had several summer adventures. She visited the lighting manufacturer, ALW,  which included a winery tour in Napa Valley and a showroom visit in Oakland, CA. Another weekend was spent camping in Los Padres National Forest close to Santa Barbara where she cooked with friends at a campfire and swam in both the Santa Ynez River and at the beach.

SCOTT

Making sure not to miss ‘The All‐American Total Solar Eclipse’, Scott ventured up the coast in an RV with his family to Madras Oregon. Along the way they stopped by Lassen Volcanic NP, Lave Bed NM, Redwood NP, drove the Oregon Coast and rode in a dune buggy. Earlier in the summer, Scott made a trip to Seattle where the highlight was a ride in a Hot-tub Boat!
