What's in a Name?

Why Oculus Light Studio?

Oculus is Latin for eye. It is also a circular aperture that allows light into a space (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oculus).

Since lighting design is a very visual profession and our job is to decide where the light allowing apertures go, the two meanings of the word suit a lighting design firm well. Realizing that there is more to lighting design that just locating lights, the eye represents both observation and perception – both important aspects of what we do.


The most famous example of an oculus is in the Pantheon in Rome


James Turrel is a well-known artist that has created a few oculi as part of his installations
